The Nervous System: A Communication System

  • The nervous system is a two-way communication system (brain ↔ body) that organizes all bodily functions.

  • It receives information via senses, which include:

    • Interoception: Internal body sensations.

    • Exteroception: External senses (e.g., sight, sound).

    • Vestibular Sense: Balance, managed by the autonomic nervous system.

  • Practice: Closing eyes and noticing the body’s automatic, subtle rebalancing movements demonstrates the vestibular sense at work.

Practical Tools for nervous system Regulation

  • Vision: A powerful tool for regulation, as it uses the most nervous system bandwidth.

    • Narrow, focused vision → Increases body tension (threat signal).

    • Soft, wide-angle vision → Decreases tension (safety signal).

  • Pressure: A direct signal of safety and containment.

    • Grounding: Feeling the pressure of the body on the ground sends a safety signal.

    • Self-Hug: A self-hug provides a direct, physical experience of being held, which is more powerful than just thinking “I am safe.”
